Hidden in a quiet courtyard near Yonghe Temple, this workshop invites you into the world of traditional Chinese lacquer (Dàqī) — an ancient craft practiced in China for over 7,000 years.
Chinese lacquer is made from the sap of the lacquer tree and has long been used in ritual objects, furniture, jewelry, and scholar’s items. Prized for its depth, durability, and subtle glow, lacquer is not painted on — it is built slowly, layer by layer, then revealed through patient polishing.
In this hands-on experience, you will shape and polish a lacquer bead using traditional techniques. As layers are gradually sanded and burnished, the surface becomes translucent and luminous. The process is quiet, meditative, and deeply tactile — a rare chance to slow down and connect with an ancient material through your hands.
Your finished bead can be worn as a necklace, bracelet, or pendant — a small, personal object carrying both time and touch.
Please note:
The listed price is a non-refundable reservation fee. The remaining 260 RMB can be paid on-site during the experience.
A minimum of 2 guests is required to run the activity. Solo travelers are warmly welcome to book — if we don’t reach the minimum number, you’ll receive a full refund.
Our experience usually starts at 10:00 AM local time, but if it’s just your group, we can be flexible and start at a time that works best for you! (Duration: Approx. 1 hour)
